FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?
Not at all. Seeking therapy is a sign of strength, not weakness. People who ask for help have internal insight to understand that there may be something hindering their inner peace or emotional growth. You already have great strengths that you’ve used before to overcome stressful situations, but for whatever reason, those strengths are not working effectively at this moment. Perhaps this problem feels extremely overwhelming, and your past strengths don’t seem to be working right now. In our work together, I will help you identify what these strengths are and how to implement them to what is occurring in your life at this time.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, therapy is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, if you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person, so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.

What can I expect to get out of therapy?
Depending on the reasons you are seeking out therapy, what you can expect to get out of therapy differs. Generally, my clients are seeking clarity around a certain issue, want to break the cycle of bad habits, or need advice and counsel about a current life situation. Whatever is going on for you, hopefully therapy will make it easier by providing clarity, relief, confidence, or whatever you feel you need at this time.

How long does it take to feel better?
Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them, and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.

Yes, I truly believe that therapy should be accessible to everyone; for this reason, I offer a sliding scale on a limited basis and a reduced fee for college, MSW and MFT students; please contact me to see if these slots are available.

How can I know if we are good match?
This is a great question… it’s important to feel comfortable and safe with your therapist. The best way to know if we are a match is by doing a free consultation so we can speak and get a feel for each other. Usually we can determine if we’d be a good match after one conversation. Please feel free to request a free consultation by contacting me online or calling (562) 395-3037.
